Mathematics
We lay a strong foundation for early mathematical learning through a range of engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and build essential skills in our nurseries. Mathematics is integrated into everyday experiences, providing children with the chance to explore and understand the world around them in a fun and meaningful way.
Children begin to explore numbers through a variety of activities, such as reciting numbers, singing number songs, and participating in number rhymes. These activities help them become familiar with number patterns and develop early counting skills. Through hands-on experiences, they also learn key mathematical vocabulary like ‘more than’, ‘less than’, ‘over’, and ‘under’, expanding their understanding of mathematical concepts.
Shape and pattern exploration is another core part of our curriculum. Children engage with puzzles, construction toys, and colour sorting activities, allowing them to investigate shapes and patterns while developing spatial awareness and problem-solving skills. Additionally, mark-making activities encourage children to practice writing numerals, while role-play areas provide rich opportunities to handle money, record numerals, and further explore mathematical concepts in real-life contexts.
Event sequencing is another key element of early Mathematics at our nursery. Children learn about time and sequence through activities like singing the days of the week song and using a visual timetable to follow the daily routine.
Mathematics is incorporated into the continuous provision of the nursery setting, with new resources and activities made available daily. Children have the freedom to explore these resources, allowing them to follow their interests and deepen their understanding at their own pace.
The role of the adults in our nursery is to model mathematical language, provide opportunities for exploration, and extend children's thinking by asking open-ended questions and guiding them through problem-solving activities. Our goal is to nurture a love for mathematics and encourage children to see the world through a mathematical lens.
