Mathematics
Our curriculum is designed with the ambitious goal of all pupils achieving mastery in Mathematics; developing a love of the subject and an ability to connect areas of learning and solve problems. We want to instil a confidence in children at a young age, to know that they can achieve in the mathematics whilst at Hamp Nursery and Infants School and in the future. We intend for pupils to enjoy the excitement, and embrace the challenge that problem solving brings.
Our maths learning is put into real life contexts where possible, to help children understand the role of mathematics in the world around them and encourage them to become lifelong learners and problem solvers. Maths is taught whole class across the school; support and the opportunity to deepen understanding is embedded to ensure that learning is accessible for all. We want our children to know that mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us. It enables us to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in everyday life. Through our growing knowledge and understanding, we learn to appreciate the contribution made by many people to the development and application of mathematics.
To achieve this we aim to ensure that all pupils should become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems. We focus on the life skills of collaboration, growth mind-set, resilience and problem solving as much as discrete mathematical knowledge. Key features of the mastery approach are used in lessons, reinforcing an expectation that all pupils are capable of achieving high standards in mathematics.
In EYFS, pupils will follow the Mastering Number program to embed early, foundation skills in mathematics and focuses on fluency. Reception children will also have one independent maths lesson which allows teachers the opportunity to assess and observe the children's learning. Shape, space and measure will be taught by using the White Rose Scheme of work, adapted to suit the needs of the class.
In Key Stage One, students will have four Mastering Number sessions a week to embed foundation skills and four maths lessons which is taught by using the White Rose scheme of work.
