Hamp Nursery and Infants School

Where every child matters

About Us

At Hamp Nursery and Infants school, our school motto embodies all that we do. Every child matters to us. It is our intention to ensure that every one of our pupils leaves our school equipped for their next steps in their lives. It is our aim that we help our pupils become responsible and considerate citizens, fully embracing British Values and growing to take an active role in providing safe and secure environments for all. We value and teach our children to value other people's differences, to value the environment and help to be responsible and care for it. We reduce, reuse and recycle, and we teach the children that "small people can make big differences".

Our approach is one which embodies the whole child, and this is reflected in our curriculum and the way in which we plan and teach. All classes and Nurseries have outdoor space, and access to our Forest School area. Our early years rooms all have their own outdoor spaces for continuous provision activities, and our children help to develop and maintain their environment, including projects such as building their own greenhouse, making and planting raised beds to "grow their  own" and creating lovely art pieces to decorate their gardens for all to share and enjoy.

Each of our classes is named after a high-quality loved children's picture book or character, and each Nursery room after a Nursery rhyme.  We have chosen this theme to show we highly value reading, and it is always a main focus of our school It is our intention that all of our pupils will leave us as keen readers, who love to pick up a book, and who value the opportunities to learn and gain knowledge through reading. We place a strong emphasis on speaking and listening and early phonics, using the Little Wandle Phonics scheme.

It is our intention that our pupils are all reading at or above the standards expected for their age by the time they leave us. Reading is the key to... success... happiness... the world... knowledge... opportunity... . Studies have shown reading for pleasure leads to... empathy...  self-awareness... positive relationships... motivation... aspiration... and well-being.

Well-being is another key feature of our school. Our staff have excellent knowledge of our pupils as individuals, and work hard to build strong trustworthy relationships with them. Relationships are key to a successful learning environment and we pride ourselves on the bonds that we form with our children and often their families. We currently follow a PSHE program called Jigsaw, in addition to which we plan well-being activities into our curriculum with every story topic, and have daily short-burst well-being activities that are fun for all.

Our curriculum section will give you more information about the content of the subject areas, and how we plan our learning to have maximum impact for our pupils. It is important to us that we celebrate our identity as an early years/infants setting, as part of the Hamp Community, and part of Bridgwater Town, and this is reflected in our curriculum, written especially for our children.

Another key feature of our school is that we all view everyday as a learning day. We teach the children that we are all still learning, we make mistakes and we learn how to be resilient and know that we can learn new things and get better by trying hard. We work with a mixture of very experienced and very new staff, in all roles, showing that we are all the same as learners. Our younger members of staff bring new ideas, new energy and keep us fresh and challenged! Our experienced members of staff offering wisdom and a wealth of knowledge, all of which provides a rich and stimulating resource bank for our pupils.  Our staff work together to grow as better educators with one shared goal in mind - to grow great children into great people!
