Where every child matters

The Power of Words Theme Week

This week our theme has been The Power of Words. We were very lucky to have a visit from a local author Emily Lloyd-Gale, who came to read some of her stories to us. The children listened carefully, thought of their own questions, and enjoyed asking her about how she writes her books. Afterwards, we drew pictures of our favourite characters from her stories.

We went on a word hunt around the school, finding different words and talking about what they mean. The children were excited to use the new words such as 'colossal, tiny and furious.' We then made word wands using sticks and stars, choosing and writing our favourite words to put on them. There were some lovely examples such as 'pop, giggle, smile, happy and love.'

One of the stories that we read this week was “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” We talked about how kind words and actions help to fill everyone’s buckets. The children made their own small buckets, which are now on display, and we add cubes to them when we are caught being kind.

We also enjoyed exploring the story of The Three Little Pigs. We created a story map, made lolly stick puppets, and acted out the story together.

To finish the week, we celebrated by making alphabet wizard hats and learned some performance poems, which we confidently performed to Night Pirates class on Friday. They also shared their own story, which they had turned into an illustrated book!

Snow Bears class have had such fun this week and have learnt so many new words!
